We had a really fabulous tour with our guides Peter and Katinka! We had long days of intensive birding, and travelled large distances, but the rewards were worth it. We saw all 6 Grasswren species (Grey Grasswren wasn’t possible due to road closures between Cameron’s Corner and the Strzleckis Track) and also other iconic arid country birds like Chestnut-banded Whiteface, Scarlet-Chested Parrot, Gibberbird, Red-lored and Gilbert’s Whistlers, Mallee Emuwren, Inland Dotterel, and Chestnut, Cinnamon and Copperback Quail-thrush. Most of these birds are very difficult to see, even if you know where to find them, so I’m pleased I chose this tour, as I would have found very few if any of my target species. This is why a trip like this is essential for seeing such iconic outback birds.

Accommodation was always comfortable, and we had a range of great pub meals supplemented by packed lunches and plenty of snacks. I always went to bed tired, but never hungry! The vehicle were comfortable, and the policy of rotating seating in both vehicles was fair, and meant that we got to spend equal time with each guide, who were both outstanding birders and great company. The guides made sure that at each site we focused on finding the target bird, allowing everyone time to see and photograph it. Most arid country birds are incredibly shy, so getting good photos was usually a matter of timing, personal skills and a bit of luck, but our guides made sure that everyone had the chance to view each bird properly. At some sites, after finding the target species, we then had time for general birding, and that also allowed us to see many more great inland birds.

I felt the pace was just right: yes, some long days in the heat, but plenty of opportunity to relax, either chatting in the car, or at dinner, as well as lots of time to learn about the birds we were seeing and their habitat. Peter and Katinka were outstanding guides, knowledgeable, helpful, patient, and above all friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend Bellbird Tours to anyone, whether a serious birder looking for key targets, or a casual birder seeking a memorable tour across stunning arid regions, with some of Australia’s most iconic birds thrown in!
