Adelaide Birdwatching Tour

Adelaide (SA) is in close proximity to a variety of habitats and therefore a day or two birding can be very rewarding. There are wetlands, tidal flats, beaches and mangroves where during the Australian summer, many species of migratory waders can be found, as well as the nomadic Banded Stilt. To add further interest, species such as Elegant, Blue-winged and Rock Parrot and Slender-billed Thornbill are regularly seen. To the east of the city the Adelaide Hills contain a string of National and Conservation Parks, each with its own character. Adelaide Rosella, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Long-billed Corella, Musk and Purple-Crowned Lorikeet, Scarlet Robin and a rich variety of Honeyeaters together with the rare Chestnut-rumped Heathwren and Crested Shrike-tit inhabit the area.

Birdwatching Adelaide Tours

To the south of the city you’ll find the Fleurieu Peninsula and coast, containing a high number of good birding sites within a relatively small area. Wetlands, swamps, coastal reserves, native bushland and a sea-watching spot attract birds such as Little Penguin, Hooded Plover, Cape Barren Goose, Southern Emu-wren, raptors, rails and crakes, waterfowl and migratory waders. Further afield, the ‘mallee’ eucalypt scrub with Mallee Ringneck, Shy Heathwren, Southern Scrub-robin and Purple-gaped Honeyeater gives way to the Murray river with its floodplains and wetlands, where rails, crakes, and many good waterbirds including Freckled Duck may be found.
