Canberra Area Guided Birding
Canberra Birdwatching
Canberra, Australia’s capital city is an unexpectedly good birding location, located where the mountains meet the inland plains, and a mix of inland and coastal birds can be seen. In the summer months, many migrants visit the capital including Rainbow Bee-eaters, Dollarbird, White-throated and Western Gerygones, just to name a few.
Canberra Mountains Birdlife
The mountains can offer a cool respite with Crested Shrike-tit, Red-browed Treecreeper, Rufous Fantail, Rose Robin, and migrants such as the Satin Flycatcher and Brush Cuckoo. Spotted Quail-thrush is a possibility, and Superb Lyrebirds can be heard. Scarlet and Flame Robins descend from the mountains in the winter and can be seen around town. Diamond Firetails, Southern Whiteface, Hooded Robin, and Brown Treecreeper can be found year round on the plains and wetlands can offer a productive haul including a range of crakes and rails, Freckled Duck and Pink-eared Duck with Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Australian Shelduck often appearing not too far from town. Autumn is the time of the spectacular honeyeater migration. There are numerous parrot species including the Superb Parrot, Gang-gang and Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. Other bush birds include 4 species of thornbills and the Speckled Warbler. Depending on the time of year, a day’s birding can yield over 100 species. A tailored guided birding tour is the best way to see the birds in the area.
